Topic: Future of Cuba
The situation in the Republic of Cuba has been solicitous especially since 1991 when UN General Assembly’s demand to end to US’s trade embargo on Cuba for twenty-third consecutive year. The US trade embargo started in 1960, after the Cuban Revolution. The US government proclaims to continue its sanctions on Cuba until it begins a process of democratization with a greater emphasis placed on human rights even though UN nations have been urging the United States to remove its embargo. Ever since the US trade embargo had begun in 1960, the US had been refusing to remove all sanctions. However, despite other nations’ predictions, President Obama of the United States decided to take the nation’s first step in 50 years to a more superior relationship with Cuba by removing US’s trade embargo on Cuba. As of December 17th earlier in 2014, President Obama has confirmed the US will ease the sanctions imposed against Cuba. As a result, there will be increases in the total price of Cuban goods Americans can take back, with the upper limit of 25% out of the total for tobacco and alcohol. In addition, both nations are planning for each others embassies to be rebuilt, as well as for bank relations to be tied once again.
Cuba had been struggling to recover ties with its biggest neighbor, the US. Even if the embargo were removed, the most challenging issue Cuba faces today is the government’s vulnerability. Fidel Castro, a Cuban socialist politician and revolutionary who served as prime minister from 1959 to 1976, and the president from 1976 to 2008, who strived as a great leader supported by all of his citizens. He is now 85, at a very old age. His 83 year-old younger brother Raul Castro takes Fidel’s place and is now in charge of the country. Castro brother’s deaths are imminent, and they would unfortunately lead to the country’s political turmoil. In turn, this will create a human rights crisis in Cuba, considering the fact that they have a huge impact on the country's politics as well as its economy.
Diplomatic ties between Cuba and the country of United Arab Emirates is now in a very stable and peaceful condition. Both UAE and Cuba’s governments have decided to establish a diplomatic tie at an ambassador’s level in 2002, and open-skies agreement on May 2014. In 28th October 2014, UAE showed its support on Cuba by voting for “Yes” in UN General Assembly vote, “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”. However, a UAE embassy was not planned to be opened, as well as other Persian Gulf states, until June in 2014. Thus Cuban-Emirati relations are not as strong, and are still young.
The country of United Arab Emirates believes that the unification of all countries supporting Cuba is the fastest way to prevent Cuba’s political and economic collision. The country supports the following proposals for improving Cuba’s society:
UAE suggests Cuba to immediately adopt a new political system, and will support the nation in order to give Cuba the proper right as a member of the United Nations. Cuba has been a socialist country since its independence in 1960. Two of the reasons of lacking daily necessities are the socialism government and the missing successor of the nation’s leader.
Also the country of UAE calls upon all nations to support United States, preparing to remove its embargo on Cuba. Since the sanction has started on 1968, Cuban residents have been suffering from harsh daily-life conditions: the government cannot access the proper equipment to fix disrepaired water pipes and buildings in the urban areas nor provide enough food to support its own population. Since the fall of USSR, Cuban government has not received enough help or funds to enhance and retain its society. The Unites States is Cuba’s largest neighbor, so the country has a responsibility to maintain Cuba’s government.
Also this nation will attempt to substantiate the support of the Cuban government by reinforcing the trade relationship between our two countries.
United Arab Emirates, as a member of the United Nations, will be a supporting state and is willing to provide aid as necessary to strengthen Cuba.
